Disquiet Junto Project 0635: ’Round the Bend
Dear Members of the Disquiet Junto,
Normally this project post would have gone live at 12:10am Pacific, but for some reason WordPress posted it to disquiet.com, my website, immediately. My guess is WordPress was having issues with Leap Year — it's like a low-key Y2K. I left it live. This email was intended to go out at the same time, but similarly I'm having difficulty scheduling it on Buttondown, so it's going out a few hours early, too. The source audio for this week's project is a field recording that Junto member Todd (Toaster) Elliott made of a train. He also took the photo — that's his dog. Instructions appear below.
In case you didn't see the announcement already, there's a new episode, on the excellent Artists & Hackers podcast, about the Disquiet Junto in the context of the Creative Commons. Music by several Junto participants (wasabicube, analoc, he_nu_ri, Ohm Research, caustic_gates, and NolanVerde) was included in the episode, and I was interviewed. Thanks go out to Lee Tusman, the podcast host, who has participated in the Junto. More details at:
Creating in a Commons: Conversations with Creative Commons and Disquiet Junto
Kat Walsh from Creative Commons joins us to talk about the history of Creative Commons as a ‘hack on copyright.’ Marc Weidenbaum speaks on the history of the Disquiet Junto, a long-running online distributed community creating new music in response to a weekly online composition challenge.
And that covers it. Thanks, as always, for your generosity with your time, creativity, and curiosity.
Oh yes — and a query: if you have experience editing podcasts and have interest in helping out a non-profit arts organization, please let me know. It's a very interesting project, and involves sound, history, labor issues, and environmental matters. We'll probably do about five episodes. It's early stages.
Best from San Francisco,
Marc
