Disquiet Junto Project 0653: Break a Rule
Dear Members of the Disquiet Junto,
First, I have a question — really, a favor to ask. If you’re fluent in a language other than English, and there’s a term in that language for what we call a “field recording,” would you please share that term with me? I don't mean “field recording” in the Alan Lomax sense of the term — that is, I don’t mean recordings of musicians playing remotely and being recorded in their personal space. I mean field recording in the sense of recording the sound of an environment. This is for some research I’ve undertaken. Thank you very much.
Second, this week’s project appears below. When the Junto first started, way back in January 2012, I always did a totally new project each week. Eventually I realized that occasionally repeating projects — as well as doing slight variations on previous projects — was useful. I learned, in other words, to break a rule I had set for myself. This week’s project is about breaking rules.
And that covers it. Thanks, as always, for your generosity with your time, creativity, and curiosity.
Best from San Francisco,

Disquiet Junto Project 0653: Break a Rule
The Assignment: Stop doing something you always do.
Step 1: Thinks of things you consider unbreakable rules when you make music. Maybe you never use a vocal, or you always use a click track, or you never remake earlier work, or you always use a specific instrument. The longer you think about these rules, the more you’ll unearth rules that you hadn’t even recognized as rules before.
Step 2: Make a list of the self-imposed rules you came up with in Step 1.
Step 3: Choose one rule from Step 2 and record a track in which you break that rule.
Tasks Upon Completion:
Label: Include “disquiet0653” (no spaces/quotes) in the name of your track.
Upload: Post your track to a public account (SoundCloud preferred but by no means required). It’s best to focus on one track, but if you post more than one, clarify which is the “main” rendition.
