Disquiet Junto Project 0771: Phase Incident

Dear Members of the Disquiet Junto,
Hi. Just so there’s no ambiguity, there are rules on the Lines message board (aka llllllll.co) regarding AI usage, among other forms of participation. The Disquiet Junto community is a guest of the Lines message board. We haven’t always been there. The Junto was formed in January 2012, while our first project co-hosted on Lines appeared in April 2016 (0224: “Make Music from Refrigerators”), and we’ve been there weekly ever since. I would like for us to remain there. You don’t have to post to Lines to participate in the Junto, but if you do post to Lines, please follow that site’s guidelines, as you would those of any platform to which you contribute. Many thanks.
Also dating back to 2016: I was happily reminded this week by Lines member paubarrina that a decade ago we celebrated the 80th birthday of Steve Reich with a Disquiet Junto project. Now we’re doing the exact same project all over again, except this time for the great minimalist’s 90th birthday, which occurred on October 3.
And that covers it. Thanks, as always, for your generosity with your time, creativity, and curiosity.
Best from San Francisco,
Marc Weidenbaum

Disquiet Junto Project 0771: Phase Incident
The Assignment: Celebrate Steve Reich’s 90th birthday.
In October 2016, the Disquiet Junto celebrated Steve Reich’s 80th birthday. That was project 0249. This month, the great minimalist composer turned 90. Let’s do it again, at the suggestion of llllllll.co member paubarrina. Same steps as last time:
Step 1: October 3 marked the 90th birthday of composer Steve Reich. Prepare to record a tribute to him.
Step 2: Select a short segment of sound or music that can be looped and, per Reich’s own technique, “phased.” Fortunately, the song “Happy Birthday” has entered the public domain. Consider using it.
Step 3: Take the segment from Step 2 and play it on repeat, layering the loop with slightly different timing to create a phasing effect. Play around with this, editing the loops until you have some successful or interesting sounds/accidents.
Tasks Upon Completion:
Label: Include “disquiet0771” (no spaces/quotes) in the name of your track.
Upload: A person participating in the Disquiet Junto should post only one track per weekly project (SoundCloud account preferred but not required). If on occasion you feel inspired to post more than one track (whether to a single account or across multiple accounts), you should clarify which is the “main” rendition for consideration by fellow members and (if on SoundCloud) for inclusion in the SoundCloud playlist.
Share: Post your track and a description/explanation at https://llllllll.co/t/disquiet-junto-project-0771-phase-incident/
Discuss: Listen to and comment on the other tracks.
Additional Details:
Length: The length is up to you. Will you come back into phase?
Deadline: Monday, October 12, 2026, 11:59pm (that is: just before midnight) wherever you are.
